A NEW social club for the over 50s in Whitley Wood opens with a free event on Wednesday 18th February, 11am – 4pm at Whitley Wood Community Centre.
The lively launch includes zumba, bingo, games and prizes, providing a taste of what the social club will have on offer. There will be plenty of opportunity to meet friends or make new ones over free soup and hot drinks.
An advice surgery from the Winter Warm Programme – where residents can get help and tips on how to cut their energy bills and keep warm during the winter months – is also part of the club’s launch event.
Lead Councillor for Adult Social Care, Rachel Eden said:
“I am delighted that following the success of older people’s social clubs in other parts of the town, the Council is launching this new club in Whitley Wood.
“The launch will be a welcoming, fun social event with the added bonus of an advice session from the Winter Warm Programme.
“Older people in Reading want fun, active clubs in their neighbourhood to help them live life to the full. Working with volunteers, communities and older people themselves the Council is determined that despite the government cuts we will invest in services for Whitley Wood and communities across Reading.”
After the launch event, the social club will run weekly every Wednesday from 25th February. Whitley Wood Community Centre is located on the no.6 and the no. 9 bus routes – stop at Engineer’s Court.
