June events

  • Councillors surgery: Ward Councillors, Matt Rodda MP and the Whitley area PCSO will be at The Whitley Cafe on Saturday 2nd june from 10.30am-12pm. Please come along and discuss any local issues.
  • ACE (adults, education & children’s services) committee meeting: Ashley will be in attendance in his role as lead for education at the meeting on  Tuesday 5th June at 6.30pm at the Civic centre.
  • Ridgeway Governors meeting: Ashley will be discussing future strategy for the school on Wednesday 13th June at 9.30am at Ridgeway.
  • Full Council meeting: Church Ward Councillors will be in attendance for a full evening of business on Tuesday 26th at 6.30pm at the Civic centre. 
  • Northcourt Avenue street party: Ashley will be in attendance at the Northcourt Avenue street party as part of the Big lunch initiative which has enabled some roads to temporarily close & neighbours to gather. This will take place on Sunday 3rd June at 4pm.
  • Whitley Wood fire station open day: Berkhire fire and rescue will be holding their annual open day including demos and a BBQ on Saturday 2nd from 10am-4pm.
  • South Reading Community hub official opening: The renovated community centre on Northumberland Avenue incorporating library, cafe and community space will hav it’s official unveiling on Tuesday 26th June at 11am.
  • South Reading calendar: The final preparation of the calendar update will take place this month. If you want any events added please contact Ashley.

May events

Whitley art work unveiling: the official unveiling of the new art work in South Reading will take place on Friday 11th May at 11.30am at Rabsons Rec.

Reading Labour students AGM: A meeting of the Labour students society will take place on Friday 11th March at 5.30pm in the bottom floor of Edith Morley.

Whitley for real feedback: The Whitley researchers from the Whitley for real project will be feeding back results from their work on Wednesday 16th May at 5.30pm at the John Madejski academy.

Labour party AGM: The annual General meeting of the Labour party in Reading takes place on Thursday 10th May at 8pm in the civic centre.

Reading Borough Council AGM: The Council’s AGM takes place on Thursday 23rd May at 7pm in the Town hall.

South Reading calendar: Ashley will be collating dates and beginning designs for the next edition of the South Reading calendar to ruin from July to August. If you want any dates included please email them to Ashley.

Ward walk: Ashley will be walking the Ward to spot any issues and speak to residents on Saturday 19th May in the early afternoon.

Youth Council meeting: Ashley will be in attendance to meet and discuss young people’s issues on Monday 14th at the Civic centre.

Church Ward Labour party meeting: members of the local party will be meeting to discuss issues & celebrate the election result on Thursday 17th May at 7pm 103 Northcourt Avenue.

Canvassing: Doors on Cherry Grove will be knocked to ask residents concerns on Saturday 10th March at 10.30am, Foxhays Road on Sunday 11th March at 11am and Winton Road on Saturday 31st March at 11am.

Reading half marathon: Thousands of athletes and fun runners will be running through South Reading for the annual half marathon on Sunday 21st March, starting at 10am.

  • St.Patrick’s hall exhibition: Reading University will be consulting on their latest proposal for the redevelopment of St.Patrick’s hall on Wednesday 25th October at 5pm in the Shamrock room within the hall.
  • John Madejski academy open morning: Cllr Pearce will be visiting the rapidly improving JMA secondary school on Hartland road to speak with the Principal Laura Ellener on Monday 30th October at 9am.
  • Newsletter delivery- The latest copy of the Church Ward Rose will be delivered towards the end of October to keep residents up to date with what their Cllrs have been doing in the past months.

  • South Reading Churches fun day- The hugely popular and established fun day will return again this year on Saturday July 8th, 12pm-3pm at Rabsons Rec. As usual there will be many different stalls, free food and plenty for kids to do.
  • Ridgeway Primary Governors day- Cllr Pearce will be in attendance at Ridgeway for a full day of meetings, learning walks and discussions with teachers on Monday 10th July.
  • WhitFest- The annual arts festival for South Reading returns this year at John Madejski academy on Saturday July 22nd from 12pm. Local Cllrs will be in attendance as well as local talent showcasing what they are capable of.
  • South Reading network meeting- local groups leaders, Councillors and Council officers will be meeting to discuss local issues and strategies on Wednesday 19th July at 1pm. Venue to be confirmed.
  • South Reading events calendar-The latest update of the popular events calendar will be delivered to nearly 4000 homes this month, giving local residents key dates and events for the next 6 months.

  • General election: The election of the next MP for Reading East takes place on Thursday 8th June. You can vote anytime between 7am and 10pm in polling stations in Church Ward. These include South Reading community centre on Northumberland Avenue, the scout hut on Northcourt Avenue, Ridgeway school and the Christ the King Church on Northumberland Avenue. Labour’s candidate is Cllr Matt Rodda.
  • A Syrian Love Story at Reading Film Theatre- Local Labour members will be attending a screening of this film at the RFT in the Palmer building at Reading University on Tuesday 20th June at 8pm.
  • South Reading calendar preparation: The updated version of the calendar from July to December is being prepared this month so if anyone has any events they wish to include, please get in contact.

  • South Reading NHS petition: Counciilors and activisits willl be knocking on doors to collect signatures for a petition asking for fairer NHS funding in South Reading. We will be out on Saturday’s 11th/18th/25th March at 11am on roads including Blagdon roads, Foxhays road, Windemere road and Elm road.
  • Full Council meeting: Church Ward Cllrs will be in attendance on Tuesday 28th March at 6.30pm at the Civic centre. Amongst other questions and motions, Cllr Pearce will be proposing a motion about NHS funding in South Reading.

  • Childrens centre consultation- Due to severe Government budget cuts the Council is having to consult on the future of children’s centres across the town. To have your say come to South Reading Youth and community centre on Thursday 16th February at 10am-12pm
  • Full Council meeting- the public meeting of Readings Counciilors including Church Ward Councillors takes place on February 21st at 6.30pm at the Civic centre.
  • Reading Banner delivery- The Labour party Reading wide Banner newsletter will be delivered to residents at the end of the month. This edition will focus on the savage Governemnt cuts the Council is facing.

  • Councillors surgery: Councillors will be holding their regular monthly surgery on Saturday 7th January at 10.30am at the Whitley cafe.
  • Youth centre consultation: plans to close Whitley Libraries current building and relocate to a new community hub at the community centre are discussed in the ward news section of this site. A consultation on the proposals starts on Wedenesdsy Janaury 4th. The link can be found here.
  • Full Council meeting: Church Ward Councillors will be present at January’s Full Council meeting at the Civic centre on Bridge street on Tuesday 24th January at 6.30pm. The issue of GP funding in South Readng is due to come up.
  • South Reading action group-local residents are designed to meet with community leaders on Thursday 26th January at 7pm at the South Reading Youth and community centre. 
  • Notice boards: Councillors will be bringing two notice boards back into use this month. The community information points by Beech Lane and Linden Road/Blagdon road will have useful information inputted.

  • Whitley community development association meeting-The last meeting of the year for WCDA (the sterr ing group for the lottery grant money) is on Wednesday December 7th at 7pm in the Whitley cafe.
  • Planning committee-Ashley will be present at the Council planning committee meeting on Wednesday 7th December at 7pm at the Council civic offices on Bridge street. It is expected the application for St Patricks hall redevelopment will appear.
