November events

Councillor’s advice surgery: Church Ward Councillors will be available to discuss any issues with residents on Saturday 2nd November at 10.30am-12pm at The Whitley Café. The rugby world cup final will also be showing at the same time!

Canvassing– Councillors and activists will be out speaking to residents on Sunday 3rd November at 11am on Foxhays Road, Northumberland Avenue, Blagdon Road & Cressingham Road.

Full Council meeting: Church Ward Councillors will be in attendance at the Full Council meeting on Monday 4th at 6.30pm at the Civic Centre where Ashley will be proposing a motion against high stakes testing in primary schools.

Remembrance service– Church Ward Councillors will pay their respects on the morning of Sunday 10th at St Mary’s Butts before a march through town.

Policy Committee meeting: Ashley will be present in his role as Lead member for education on Monday 18th at 6.30pm at the Civic Centre.

Head teachers climate change conference: Ashley will introduce an afternoon of events that will help head teachers from across Reading have a greater focus on climate change in each of their respective schools. The event starts at 1pm at Alfred Sutton school on Monday 4th November.

Prospect school visit: Ashley will be visiting Prospect School in West Reading to meet head teacher David Littlemore to discuss the good work happening there on Friday 8th November.

General election: As you may have heard, a general election has been called for Thursday December 12th. Here in Reading East you get to vote for the excellent Matt Rodda for Labour. If you would like a postal vote please contact us or the Council. Remember polling stations on the day are at Ridgeway school, scout hut on Northcourt Avenue, Christ The King Church on Northumberland Avenue and the community centre on Northumberland.

Church Ward news: Also this month Councillors will start asking groups for dates to input into the updated South Reading calendar due in January, will be exploring speed calming measures with Council officers regarding Cressingham Road/Northcourt Avenue area, and various planning matters are also being investigated.

Church Ward Labour party meeting: members of the local party will be meeting to discuss issues & campaigning on Monday 14th at 7.30pm at 103 Northcourt Avenue. All local members welcome to join.

ACE committee meeting: Ashley and Ruth will be in attendance at the Adult, Children services and education committee meeting on Monday 21st October at 6.30pm at the Civic centre. A report on recent educational results in Reading will be discussed.

Schools Forum: discussions between school head teachers will take place on Wednesday 16th October at 5pm at the Civic Centre.

SEND workshop: Discussions on the SEND strategy between Ashley as lead member for education, officers of Brighter futures for children and School heads will take place at Church End Primary on Wednesday 2nd October from 9am.

Primary Heads meetings: Ashley will hear updates and concerns of Primary head teachers on Wednesday 2nd October at Micklands school at 2pm.

Meeting to discuss land between Staverton Road and The Lawns: A meeting to discuss a plan to revive some derelict land between the above places will take place on Wednesday 9th October at the Whitley Café at 3.45pm.

Pupil place planning event: Head teachers, Councillors, Governors and Council officers will be discussing future plans for school places and how we best plan for this on Monday 21st October from 2pm at the Civic Centre.

Cedar Road waiting restrictions consultation: A survey will be delivered in the next few weeks to seek resident views on potentially introducing waiting restrictions on the road.

  • Reading Mencap Summer Fair: Harris Garden of Reading University (off Pepper Lane) will host numerous stalls for the Mencap Summer Fair on Sunday 8th September from 2-5pm.
  • Reading University community forum: Church Ward Cllrs will be in attendance to see how the University can work with the local community on Thursday 16th at 6.30pm.

  • Canvassing– Councillors and activists will be out speaking to residents on Thursday 1st on Sycamore Road and Hazel Crescent (late afternoon), Saturday 10th in Staverton Road area & Ashburton Road (morning), Tuesday 6th on Monksbarn & the top of Cressingham Road & Thursday 8th on Winton & Brybur Roads (afternoon).
  • A-level & GCSE results days– students in South Reading attending JMA & Reading Girls as well as schools further afield will be receiving A-level results on Thursdays 15th with GCSE’s on Thursday 22nd. Good luck to all.
  • Disability Awareness day-Featuring local organisations supporting people with a long-term health condition and their carers, and showcasing activities including basic sign language training, hearing test, and hand massage and nail painting. Will be held on Wednesday 15th from 11am-3pm at The Oracle shopping centre.
  • NARA meeting- The Northcourt Avenue residents association is having its next meeting on Thursday 8th to discuss local issues. Venue the.
  • Ward issues: across the month Councillors will be working with the Council on issues affecting the ward including the travellers on Long Barn Lane, potential use of the land between Staverton Road & The Lawns flats, student behaviour concerns and various planning applications.

  • Canvassing– Councillors and activists will be out speaking to residents on Thursday 25th on Hillbrow/Tamarisk (late afternoon), Saturday 27th on Highmead Close & Cherry Grove (morning) & Monday 29th on Ennerdale Road (morning).
  • NQT Celebration: Ashley will help congratulate newly qualified teachers at a celebratory event at The Civic centre on Wednesday 10th July at 4.30pm.
  • Whitley Wood fire station open day: Berkhire fire and rescue will be holding their annual open day including demos and a BBQ on Saturday 6th from 10am-4pm.
  • South Reading fun day- Councillors and activists will have a stall with games, prizes and competitions on Saturday July 13th, 12pm-3pm at John Madejski academy. As usual there will be many different stalls, free food and plenty for kids to do.
  • South Reading calendar: The latest version of the popular South Reading calendar with lots of dates for local events will be delivered to every household in the ward. If you have any feedback on this please contact us.
  • Children in Care film: A film made by youngsters and carers about their lives in Care will be screened on July 23rd at 6pm at Vue cinema.

  • Full Council meeting: Church Ward Councillors will be in attendance at the Full Council meeting on Tuesday 25th June at 6.30pm at the Civic Centre.
  • Rading buses open day-the Council owned and run bus company, and winner of a string of national bus awards will be holding its annual open day on Sunday June 30th from 10am at Great Knollys street. Many stalls, food and behind the scenes tours are available.

  • New Directions visit: Ashley will visit Reading’s excellent adult education service based on Northumberland Avenue, speaking with the Head & teachers on Thursday 6th June at 1.30pm.
  • ABC to read AGM: Ashley will be delighted to attend the ABC to read AGM on Thursday 27th June at Waterside centre at 11am.

The Council’s Special Educational Needs strategy and a Fair workload charter for teachers will be discussed by Ashley as lead member for education.
  • Visit to Blagdon nursery: Ashley will visit the Council maintained nursery to discuss funding and future plans with the Head on Wednesday 3rd April.
  • Newsletter delivery: The latest edition of the Church Ward Labour Rose newsletter will be delivered to every household across the Ward by our Councillors & volunteers across the month.

Whitley art work unveiling: the official unveiling of the new art work in South Reading will take place on Friday 11th May at 11.30am at Rabsons Rec.

Reading Labour students AGM: A meeting of the Labour students society will take place on Friday 11th March at 5.30pm in the bottom floor of Edith Morley.

Whitley for real feedback: The Whitley researchers from the Whitley for real project will be feeding back results from their work on Wednesday 16th May at 5.30pm at the John Madejski academy.

Labour party AGM: The annual General meeting of the Labour party in Reading takes place on Thursday 10th May at 8pm in the civic centre.

Reading Borough Council AGM: The Council’s AGM takes place on Thursday 23rd May at 7pm in the Town hall.

South Reading calendar: Ashley will be collating dates and beginning designs for the next edition of the South Reading calendar to ruin from July to August. If you want any dates included please email them to Ashley.

Ward walk: Ashley will be walking the Ward to spot any issues and speak to residents on Saturday 19th May in the early afternoon.

  • Planning meeting: This months planning committee of which Ashley is a member, will take place on Wednesday 4th April at 6.30pm at the Civic centre.
  • ACE (adults, education & children’s services) committee meeting:  Ashley will be in attendance and chairing the meeting on  Thursday 5th April at 6.30pm at the Civic centre.
  • Ridgeway Full Governors meeting: Ashley will chair the Full Governors meeting at the school on Thursday 26th April at 7pm at Ridgeway.
  • Church Ward Rose and Reading Banner delivery: The latest editions of the local Labour party newsletter and the Church Ward Rose will be delivered through doors this month, informing residents about local election issues.
  • Canvassing: Doors on Alandale & Wentworth will be knocked to ask residents concerns on  at 12.30pm on Wednesday 4th April, Shinfield Road on Thursday 5th at 12.30pm, Hollydale & Wheatley on Friday 6th at 12.30pm, Axbridge & Torrington on Saturday 7th at 11am, Windermere on Monday 9th at 12.30pm, Barnsdale on Friday 13th at 12.30pm, Cressingham Road on Wednesday 11th at 5.30pm, Whitley Wood Road on Saturday 14th at 11am, Hartland Road on Thursday 19th at 5pm, Northcourt Avenue on Saturday 20th at 11am and Cherry Grove on Saturday 27th at 11am.
  • Reading youth Council event: Get involved, get voting. Event to inform young people about Reading Youth Council and give an insight into the work of local councils, councillors, and MPs. Tuesday 3rd April, 5.30pm at Civic centre.
  • WCDA: Remember the Whitley £1m- open evening showcasing current and future projects of Whitley community development association and the lottery money on Wednesday 11th April at 6.30pm at Whitley Cafe.

March events

Councillors surgery: Ward Councillors and the Whitley area PCSO will be at The Whitley Cafe on Saturday 3rd March from 10.30am-12pm. Please come along and discuss any local issues.

Canvassing: Doors on Cherry Grove will be knocked to ask residents concerns on Saturday 10th March at 10.30am, Foxhays Road on Sunday 11th March at 11am and Winton Road on Saturday 31st March at 11am.

Reading half marathon: Thousands of athletes and fun runners will be running through South Reading for the annual half marathon on Sunday 21st March, starting at 10am.

  • Ridgeway Full Governors meeting: Ashley will chair the second Full Governors meeting of the school year on Thursday 8th February at 7pm at Ridgeway school.
  • Reading Banner delivery: The latest edition of the Reading wide Labour party newsletter the Reading Banner will be delivered through doors this month and can be viewed elsewhere on this website
  • Reading Council Big event: This years RBC big event will focus on ways to tackle loneliness in Reading. It will take place on Wednesday 21st February at the town hall from 5-8pm.
  • Labour AMM: The Labour All members meeting will take place on Thursday 22nd February at the Civic centre at 8pm. 
  • Ridgeway parents evening: Ashley will be meeting parents in his role as Chair of Governors on Thursday 22nd February at 6pm.
